When your kid's day falls apart, so does yours.

SOUND FAMILIAR?

  • Awake to out-the-door without a meltdown? (ha! bold of you to expect that)

  • "Shoes" said for the hundredth time this morning (somehow they’re still not on)

  • Switching activities = a whole production (yes, even snack to slightly different snack)

  • The gap between "home from school" and "bed" goes sideways if nobody knows what's next (which is always)

  • Bedtime running on fumes—yours and theirs (there goes the routine, out the window)

If you nodded at even *one* of those… Girl, same.

UNDERNEATH IT ALL…

You just want your kid to feel a little more confident moving through their day.

(And you—a little less wrung out).

I get it. The counting-down-to-bedtime-since-lunch kind of get it.

Hi! I’m Sarah. Late-diagnosed neurodivergent mom and a proud member of the still-figuring-it-out club.

And that’s precisely why I created these daily routine charts. I’m right there with you.

RAISING TODDLERS? NEURO-SPICY KIDS?

Then you already know…

Autonomy is everything.

Nobody, kid or grown-up, loves being told what to do all day long. Give them a say—a way to see what's next and move toward it themselves, instead of waiting to be told—and something shifts.

They're not being managed through their day anymore. They're just living it. Your daily routine shouldn’t be one more thing for you to enforce, but something your kiddo can actually own.

And now for you.

♥

  • Understanding feelings early pays off later.

In a study of Head Start kids, the preschoolers who understood emotions better had fewer social problems by first grade.

    — Izard et al., Psychological Science, 2001

  • About half of autistic people find it hard to name their own feelings.

It’s called alexithymia. It affects 49.9% of autistic people, compared to about 5% of non-autistic people. That’s exactly why I designed the My Body’s Signals poster. A tight tummy or a hot face is often the first clue, long before there’s a word for it.

    — Kinnaird, Stewart & Tchanturia, European Psychiatry, 2019

  • For many kids with ADHD, big feelings are part of the package.

Researchers estimate that around 25–45% of children with ADHD also struggle to regulate their emotions. It isn’t just about focus. That’s why the bundle includes tools for noticing feelings, naming them, and finding a way back to calm.

    — Shaw et al., American Journal of Psychiatry, 2014

  • Naming a feeling calms the brain’s alarm system.

In a brain-imaging study, putting a feeling into words calmed activity in the amygdala. The study was done with adults, but the idea is simple. A feeling with a name is a little easier to handle.

    — Lieberman et al., Psychological Science, 2007 (UCLA)

  • Pictures help autistic kids. And there’s research to back it up.

A major review of research from 1990 to 2017 named visual supports one of 28 evidence-based practices for autistic kids. That’s why you see them in so many classrooms, therapy rooms, and OT offices.

    — National Clearinghouse on Autism Evidence and Practice (NCAEP), 2020

So… what’s included in your calming corner bundle?

GRAB A SNACK. LET'S TAKE THE TOUR.

Mark the Spot

CALM DOWN CORNER SIGN

A soft watercolor sunburst that says this is the place. Hang it up, and your calming corner stops feeling like a timeout spot. It becomes somewhere they want to go.

Notice the Feeling

MY BODY’S SIGNALS (5 VERSIONS)

A lot of kids feel a feeling before they can name it. This poster connects the dots: tight tummy, hot face, fast heart, clenched hands, wiggly legs. There are five versions with five different kids, so your kiddo can connect with one that looks like them.

Name the Feeling

FEELINGS CHECK-IN + HOW BIG IS MY FEELING?

Twelve faces to point to, from happy and silly to worried and confused. The feelings thermometer runs from 1 (calm) to 5 (too big), so you both know what you're working with before deciding what comes next.

Calming Tools

SIX WAYS TO FIND CALM

  • Square Breathing: They trace the square with a finger and breathe along. Super simple. Works on me too!

  • Use Your Senses: The 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise, painted along a little forest path. Really good for a racing brain.

  • Calm Down Choices: Six options, like hugging a pillow, getting a drink of water, or asking for a hug. They pick, so it feels like theirs.

  • Movement Break: For when the wiggles simply must come out.

  • My Sensory Toolkit: Helpful for kids who need something but can't say what.

  • It's Okay To… : Cry, need a break, stim, say no, ask for help. I created this autism poster that treats stimming as normal, because it is!
